Chinese Book of the Day: The Roots of Wisdom

The Roots of Wisdom (Cai Gen Tan) is part of a series of books that uses ancient Chinese classics and translates and makes them relevant for a modern Chinese audience. The Roots of Wisdom was written in circa 1590 by scholar and philosopher Hong Zicheng. This book eclectically combines elements from the Three teachings (Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism).

This book is in the format:

  • Some of the original text (原文) followed by modern translation (译文) then explanation (注释).

This book is designed for native Chinese speakers but could be used by upper intermediate-advanced learners of Chinese.

Chinese Book of the Day: Ba Jin’s Family

Family by Ba Jin is an autobiographical novel which tells the story of an upper-class family in the city of Chengdu in the early 1920s. The novel was first serialized in 1931-2 and then released in a single volume in 1933. It is probably Ba Jin’s most famous work, often read for its insights into the system prevalent in the early 20th century in CHina. The Family(jia) focuses on three brothers from the Gao family, Juexin, Juemin and Juehui, and their struggles with the oppressive autocracy of their feudalistic family.

In his works Cao paints an elegant picture of Chinese village life using skillful language and powerful metaphors. This book is a lovely book which is very portable(dimensions of 19cm x 13cm)

Jimmy Liao has created some amazing books and his pictures are characterized by their use of striking, bold colours. The books depict central figures that often appear small in the foreground, suggesting the viewpoint of a child in the wide, sometimes sinister, world, or to hint at loneliness.
